Connection an DS90C387 on TFP410

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TFP410, DS90C387, DS90CF388, DS90C387A, TFP401A

Hi,

I want to connect an 24" 1900x1200 S-IPS panel to my Pandaboard ES directly over LVDS. After I have studied the schematics of Pandaboard ES I saw they were using an TFP410, so I thought I could connect an DS90C387 directly to the TFP410 and then to my Panel. Could this work?

Thanks for your help!

  • Hello,

The TFP410 transmits T.M.D.S signals so it will not interface with  a LVDS receiver.

Please elaborate more on your application and we can suggest you the best option (bit/pixels, refresh rate, panel specs, etc)

    Regards.

  • Greetings -

The TFP410 is a Serializer funtion that outputs TMDS levels for HDMI/DVI protocol.  The DS90C387 is also a Serializer, but outputs LVDS levels for the LDI (FPD-Link / FlatLink) protocol.  As noted by Elias, you can not connect a DS90C387 to the TFP410 as they are the same funtion (SER).  Also you should not connect the LVDS DES (DS90CF388) to the TFP410 again, as that would be a cross connect of TMDS to LVDS and that is not supported.  About the only way to go here would be to connect the DS90C387 inputs to the GPU output in the LVCMOS domain to convert the 24 RGB plus video control & clock to LVDS via the DS90C387 inplace of the TMDS device to give you a LVDS output.  I am not aware of a bus convertor device that would receive TMDS and output LVDS.

  • Thanks for your reply.

You have requested more information about my project. So I try to explain which idea I have. For that I have made some schematic.

I want to use a Pandaboard ES to generate my picture data an then I want to convert that data with a selfmade circuit for an IPS panel. I thought I could use the "LCD Expansionport" from Pandaboard...The goal is, to have an IPS panel without its controllerboard and only with the LVDS interface which will get its data from my selfmade circuit.

This project is for a bachelor thesis and on an optical measurement system.

It would be fantastic if you could tell me which device will work for this.

    Thanks Jürgen

  • Oh I see my failure.

Do you think it will be easier to use the DVI port form Pandaboard ES by using an DVI to LVDS Bridge. I found a paper from you for such an application (SLLA325). Using an TFP401A as DVI RX and a DS90C387A as an LVDS TX.

  • Greetings -

It really depends on your needs, do you want to build a single proto, or additional systems?  A DVI RX to // RGB to LVDS convertor board is also a possiblility. and might be the easier way to go if you need to build a few systems.  If you want to proto a single system, then the source board modifications / rework might be the best way to go.

  • Thanks for your reply John.

At the moment I want to build a single proto.

Is there more information or better an example circuit for TFP401A and DS90C387A working togehter? So I would be easier for me to prevent stupid failures developing a ciruit.

  • Greetings -

Since you are building a single proto, I would suggest you review both options to determine which path is the best to take.  Both will require a PCB.  If jumping signals (LVCMOS RGB) from one board to the other other use a shortest path as possible and place multiple grounds in the there too.  Good Luck on your project.  You might want to look to see if there is a commercial product to convert HDMI to LVDS also, if you could find one that might also be a solution.
