DP83848YB accepts CMOS/LVTTL logic IO's

hi

will the ethernet PHY DP83848 accepts CMOS/LVTTL logic IO's? the MAC devices has 5V IO's ( CMOS) communicating to the PHY. can i directly map to the PHY? is the PHY 5V tolerable? the datasheet shows the absolute maximum volatge on pins as 4.7V ( Vcc+0.5V , Vcc- 4.2v max). Few PHYs are showing the same values but also mentioning it accepts CMOS/LVTTL logics , whether this PHY also accepts ?

regards

Jonna

  • Jonna,

The DP83848 is not 5V tolerant.  The supply range of -0.5 V to 4.2 V shown in the datasheet is the absolute maximum rating.  Beyond these limits, the safety of the device cannot be guaranteed.

The DC input voltage of -0.5V to VCC + 0.5V is relative to the supply voltage of 3.3 Volts +/- .3V specified in the Recommended Operating Conditions sections of the datasheet.  Note that even with the maximum supply voltage of 3.6V (3.3V + .3V), an additional 0.5V on the DC input would not exceed the absolute maximum rating of 4.2V.

The DP83848 can accept LVTTL and 3.3V CMOS levels.  If the MAC outputs 5V levels, level translation would be required between the MAC and the DP83848.
