Ethernet PHY and SNI bus (DP83848I)

Hi,

I'm trying to get information about SNI bus used on some ethernet PHY.

There is no diagram in the datahsheet, nothing that explain the behavior.

Is this bus recommended for new design?

Till, on an old design I would need to implement this bus to replace an obsolete AMD AM79C874 with GPSI bus (seems to be similar to SNI).

Has somebody already experimented this?

  • Stephen,

The timing for the SNI (Serial Network Interface) is shown in Section 8.2.13 "10 Mb/s Serial Mode Transmit Timing" and Section 8.2.14 "10 Mb/s Serial Mode Receive Timing.  I suspect that the confusion on this point stems from the fact that the diagrams and tables do not specifically identify SNI.  I have noted this and will include this improvement to the text in the next release of the datasheet.  Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

As for the AMD AM79C874, I am unfamiliar with the device so I cannot comment on similarity between the interfaces.  Hopefully the timing data in the DP83848I datasheet is enough to resolve the your immediate questions.
