Ethernet PHY question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83849C

I am new to ethernet PHY. I am trying to compare TI's DP83849C with davicom DM8603.

If my comparison is correct, then both have 2 Ethernet ports. The 8603 has only one MAC port, where as the 83849C has 2 MAC ports.

Both ICs serve the same function I believe, even though the 8603 calls itself ethernet switch?

  • Hitesh,

Even though they both have two ports, the TI DP83849C and the Davicom DM8603 perform different functions.  The DM8603 is a switch and includes some degree of packet manipulation, e.g. rate control, packet forwarding, packet snooping, etc.  The DP83849 does provide some flexible port swapping capabilities, but it does not provide the snooping, buffering and forwarding capabilities of a switch.

What is the end goal of your design?  What does your planned system look like?
