Hi,

Iam designing a data acquisition system which has multiple data acquisition modules separated by a distance of upto 10 metres. I intend to send the sampling clock from one of the DAQ modules to others in M-LVDS format using SN65MLVD201 transcievers. I intend to run a cat5e cable connecting the M-LVDS trancievers of all modules like a BUS. My concern is " Is there any condition (SN65MLVD201 failure) in which one of the SN65MLVD201 may pull this external BUS to ground such that it would be impossible to drive the clock signal through it.

This maybe isn't the answer you expected, but, did you check the failsafe mode?

Hi Ralph,

This device is compatible with the TIA standard (TIA-899) which provides many precautions to avoid failure conditions. For example, the driver circuits are limited to 43mA in the case of a short circuit and the recievers are high impedance with low leakage current. These drivers are also glitch-free and devices have 8kV ESD protection on critical pins.

However, in the specific case you mention of the bus being pulled to ground, there is not a specific response the devices can make to resolve this - this would be a system-level issue that the transceiver cannot solve.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the prompt reply. My only concern is " If the 6 numbers of SN65MLVD201 are tied together in a STAR topology with one of them enabled in driver mode and other 5 in reciever mode, is there any fault case where one of these 6 devices can pull the BUS to ground ?"

Hi Ralph,

The SN65MLVD201 should not pull the bus to ground in any case. Five of the devices are operating as receivers with very high input impedance and the driver should control the bus.
