Inquiry for SN65HVD33 usage to have RS485-422 bridge functionality

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD33

Hello, all.

Now I am considering to use SN65HVD33 for our industrial temperature controlling system.

The usage for this device to have RS485-422 bridge.

I suppose that this device could have this functionality, but I could not find on any specific configuration on this case.

Please let me clarify whether this device could support RS485-422 bridge functionality.

If possible, do you have any reference for this configuration?

Thank you in advance for your information.

Best regards,

  • 1) The front page of the HVD33 shows that the device supports both, RS484 and RS422 networks.

    2) The term "bridge" is used loosely as there are are several types of RS485/422 bridges. You can have input channel converted to 8 parallel output channels, or connecting an RS-422 receiver to an RS485 network, or an RS422 network (driver) to an RS485 network.

Could you please draw or sketch a draft block diagram of what you want to do?

    Thank you,

    Thomas

  • Hello, here is one example of how you could bridge RS-485 and RS422. Regards, Thomas

  • Hello, thank you for your prompt reply.

On our current phase, the block diagram is under the consideration, therefore I could not release any specific one.

However, the example you described was really helpful to have further proceed.

Thank you again for your information.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Thomas,

I saw this track when I was looking for RS422 and RS 485 mixed networks. I have one RS-422 device and two RS485 ones. I am thinking to convert RS422 to RS485, but I know they are different. However, in your respond to Atsushi it seemed I could do that. But I don't understand how your connection works. Thanks.

    Best regards,
    Wei
  • Hi Thomas,

If you have an RS-422 device and you wish to convert the RS-422 signaling from that into RS-485, that can be achieved using a full duplex device which is compliant with both standards (like the SN65HVD33). Actually most RS-485 transceivers are compliant with RS-422 as well. You can check the datasheet to confirm. The conversion could be performed similar to the picture above that was posted on 11/20/12. Basically using a full duplex RS-485 transceiver, the receiver would be tied to the RS-422 lines and the driver would be connected to the rest of the RS-485 network with the R and D pins tied together. This would allow you to convert RS-422 to RS-485 (but not the other way around). Is this what you are looking for?
