LMH0384 used for non-video protocol data

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMH0384

Hello,

can the LMH0384 be used to equalize non-video protocol data, running at 1.485GHz? The signal will be differential, with an amplitude of 800mVpk-pk, but the data will not follow any standard video protocol.

If this is achievable, can the LMH0384 effectively equalize any signal as long as it is within its operating frequency/signal amplitude range?

  • Yes, the LMH0384 can be used to equalize data signals outside of standard video signals, as long as the operating frequency and signal amplitude requirements in the datasheet are followed.

Please be aware that adaptive cable equalizers such as the LMH0384 do not operate well with single-tone signals (e.g. repeating 10101010 pattern) for too long, so I would recommend against using it to equalize clock signals or similar data patterns.

Also, the equalizer requires enough edges in the data signal in order to adapt, and is designed to work with SMPTE pathological signals (minimum of 1 transition per 20 bits).  I would recommend against using the equalizer with data patterns containing much longer transitionless intervals than this.
