DP83849IF - Various Functionality Questions

Hey everyone,

I have some questions using this part as a media converter: Port A as FX and Port B as TX.

  1. Is the loopback in this mode internal, I think figure 5 illustrates in the datasheet, but I just wanted to be sure I did not have to physically connect anything on the board on the media independent interface.
  2. I have another question how to strap EXTENDER_EN; pull it up or down? I think down, but some of my colleagues are saying pull it up.
  3. Is the LED_CFG_A signal the same as LED_CFG0?  This is not clear to us in the datasheet.
  4.  Also, is it really OK to let any “don’t-care” strapping inputs float?

Thanks everyone, any and all help is appreciated.

Regards,

Eric

  • Hi Eric,

Someone will be looking into this and will respond to you shortly.

  • HI MIke,

    Any news on this yet?
    THanks so much!

  • When in extender mode or media converter mode, the data received from the media (FX or Cu) on one port is looped back to the other port inside the device.  No external loopback connections are required.

To enable extender mode, the EXTENDER_EN strap (RXD2_B) should be pulled to the 3.3V supply by a strap resistor.

LED_CFG_A is the LED configuration strap for port A.  LED_CFG_B is the LED configuration strap for port B.  The LED_CFG strap for a port will map to the corresponding LED_CNFG register bit in the PHYCR register for that port.  Put another way, you have the right idea in your question, but the functionality is valid for each port.

The strap inputs include internal pulls.  If the default functionality is desired, then no external pulls are required for those pins.
