DP83640 : how to synchronize two devices

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83640

Hello, I am starting a design with 2 x DP83640 and I would like to connect the clocks to synchronize two devices (as in AN-1730 figure 5 - Port Synchronous Repeater System).

Is it possible to connect CLK_OUT (output of the master device) to CLK_OUT (of the slave device, configured as input)

or

Is it better to use X1 input ((of the slave device) for the best accuracy?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

  • Eric,

The CLK_OUT pin can be used as a 1588 clock input reference, but in most applications it is beneficial to use the internal 1588 clock.  Other competitors require two clock inputs - a reference clock and a 1588 clock.  We have the ability to generate our 1588 clock internally.

In your case, I believe it would be better to provide the X1 reference clock of the second device from the CLK_OUT pin of the SyncE enabled first device.  In this configuration, both devices should operate synchronously.

Note that in this configuration, the SyncE enabled first device would be considered the SyncE slave device and would derive its clock based on the receive data from the upstream SyncE master.  The second device which takes its X1 reference clock from the CLK_OUT pin of the SyncE enabled first device would then be a SyncE master to a downstream device.
