Looking at adding a USB self powered hub to our embedded board design. The TUSB2046 is a nice part with a 2-layer reference design which is helpful. The USB2514 from SMSC/Microchip is also a low cost hub BUT it includes support for USB Battery Charging while the TI part does not.

Designs based on either part should include a power management IC so I'm wondering if the TUSB2046 could be paired with one of the TI port controllers which includes the Battery Charging Controller. Something like the TPS2541 (although I'm sure of the differences between all the different parts in this series).

Does TI have a reference design (preferably 2-layer) based on a circuit which uses both of these parts? How would that cost compare to the SMSC USB2514 paired with the Micrel MIC2505/MIC2026 parts?

Unfortunately TI has no reference design with these two devices together, However the TPS2540EVM user guide brings You a better perspective of the layout design for the TPS2541 ( http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvu401b/slvu401b.pdf ). Hi Diego:

OK, fair enough, I assume you're referring to cost question at the end of my post. Could you help me understand 2 things then:

What are the differences between all of the TPS254x parts, I didn't easily see a comparison table.
Would the combination of the 2 TI parts results in a USB 2.0 hub design that supports the newer battery charging portion of the USB 2.0 spec?

Hello George,

First of all, please note that the TUSB2046 is a USB 2.0 compliance HUB, however the maximum speed You can reach with this device is Full speed. I am looking for a detailed difference table about the TPS254x

Hi Diego:

Ouch, I didn't catch that, in fact it looks like all of the USB 2.0 hubs are not high-speed hubs! Is that really true?

Hi George,

All the TI HUBs TUSB20xx are full speed, However the TUSB8040A is a supper speed Hub backward compatible with USB2.0 and complians battery charging 1.2
