TMDS serialization?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS92LV2421, TFP401A, TFP401, DS92LV2422

Hello,

I am trying to serialize a standard 3-channel (plus 1 clock ch) TMDS signal (coming from a DVI - video only - source) down to one pair of wires. The total Bitrate should be around 1.5 Gbit/s. Now as far as I am aware there is no part available that would provide exactly that.

So I was thinking about converting the TMDS video data to RGB using the TFP401A and then transmitting that data with the DS92LV2421. On the receiving end I would deserialize to RGB and connect to a Display directly or with a DVI transmitter. Could someone clarify whether this would work or not?

A colleague of mine suggested another option. I however am not sure if the following would work. Could I theoretically use a LVDS serializer like the DS90UR907Q to serialize the TMDS data stream as long as I provide proper electrical interfacing to adjust the signal levels and keep the Clock within the specifications?

Thanks,

Martin

  • Hello,

the interface between the TFP401 and the DS92LV2421 seems feasible.

I would like to hear comments from the High-Speed Interface engineers so I'm moving this thread to that forum.

    Regards.

  • The 90UR907 is tempting, but won't quite work (the formats are not the same between TMDS and FPD Link I )

Elias's suggestion to use the TFP401 and the DS92LV2421 would work, and then you would use the companion deserializer DS92LV2422 to get back to a parallel RGB (8 bits each).

  • Hi All,

I am going to move this forum post over to the CCI - Consumer and Computing Interface Forum since they support TMDS and DVI directly. I think they might want to chime in on this topic!

    Regards,

  • Hello all,

Thanks for all your answers thus far.

Yeah that's what i thought, but i wasn't sure how "intelligent" the device is. Whether or not it actually matters what data you have as long as everything is fine on an electrical level. In the end all i wanted to achieve is to get the same data as is had at the beginning (TMDS --> SerDes --> TMDS)
