Can you run multiple RS232 channels through a single transceiver? e.g.SN65C3243

Hi, I'm planning on using a SN65C3243 RS232 Line driver in one of our new designs. The design will have 4 x RS232 channels all coming from 4 x separate UART channels on our main IC. The RS232 will be operated in 3 wire mode with only Tx, Rx, and GND.

Can anyone tell me whether I can pass 3 x of the RS232 "busses" through a single SN65C3243, or will I require 4 x seperate SN65C3243 chips, and simply connect the unused input pins to 3.3V?

I'm worried that the device will suffer from interference if it is meant to only be handling signals from a single RS232 channel.

Danny,

The TX and RX channel can be used independently. The shutdown feature (if any) applies to all channels.

I see you need 8 4 TX and 8 4 RX channels.
What is your supply voltage 3.3V or 5V (or other)
What is maximum bit rate (bps)?
Do you need shutdown feature?

Hi Ronald,

Thank you for your answer. That's good to know that I can use the channels independently.

It's only 4 x Tx and 4 x Rx that I require.

The supply is 3.3V, the max bit rate is 115200 and we don't need a shutdown feature.

Do 2 x SN65C3243 devices still sound appropriate?

Danny,

2 of the SN65C3243 would provide 6 drivers and 10 receivers. This is more than needed.
2 of the TRS3232E would provide 4 drivers and 4 receivers, would cost less, and take up less board space.
