TLK105 Power Dissipation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLK105

At the Competitive Analysis (TI vs SMSC) in ESP, The PHY power dissipation of TLK105 is larger than SMSC LAN8710’s. But the w/ Magnetics power dissipation, TLK105’s power dissipation is smaller than LAN8710’s. Please let me know why is the TLK105 with Magnetics power lower than SMSC ? Power Dissipation (mW) PHY; TLK105 ……. 203mW LAN8710 ….. 176mW Power Dissipation(mW) w/ Magnetics; TLK105 …….
  • Hello TKOB,

regarding the power consumption: from the data sheet of smsc8710 (page 66 'note) it is stated that "

Current measurements do not include power applied to the magnetics or the optional external

    LEDs."

from measurements we have taken of 8710 (including center tap / magnetics) the power consumption for single sulpply @100bt =  330mw. @10bt = 429mw

    at dual supply for 8710:@100bt =  283mw. @10bt = 401mw

    for TLK105 (including center tap / magnetics) the power consumption for single sulpply @100bt =  270mw. @10bt = 307mw

    at dual supply for TLK105:@100bt =  200mw. @10bt = 230mw

to conclude: in single supply @100bt TLK device is 60mw lower than smsc8710

dual supply @100bt TLK device is 80mw lower than smsc8710. (we can go even lower using power backoff for shorter than 100m cables)

    Thanks,

  • Avaid-san, thank you very much for your reply. I'm sorry but, my customer want to know the reason why the inversion between PHY and /w magnetics result? Does TLK105 have a better driver architecture or better process?
  • TKOB-san,

power consumption (and power consumption breakdown, from magnetics /  PHY) varies due to architecture and (silicon) process. we publish power consumption results which include both TLK device and magnetic as both need to be taken into account when choosing PHY and designing the PCB.

    Thanks,

    Aviad

  • Avaid-san, thanks, I'll try to persuade customer to understand the advantage of TLK105.
  • Kobayashi-san,

Do you have the information you need regarding the TLK105 power dissipation?  Is there more information that we need to provide or can we consider this closed?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

  • Patrick-san, thank you very much for your help. My customer understood the better performance of TI's device. This item is closed, thanks.
