Customer using  PCIe transceivers between the Virtex6Lx and end point(server).The connection is by a standat molex cable(1-3 meters).its connects between our pcb to a server.
Is it necessary to use this chip(a repeater and emphasis  ) between the units  or the internal repeater and de Emphasis of the FPGA is enough?

What is your recommendations?
Another thing, is it possible to use DS80pci402 automatic rate detect without using SMBus?

  • The Signal Integrity in the FPGA may be enough, but by using the DS80PCi402, you would be reducing risk and increasing robustness of the solution.   The Virtex6 is a physically large IC, which will probably be placed near the center of the PCB, so in addition to the cable, there will be a certain amount of trace on the PCB to drive, and on the PCB the signal will be more susceptible to crosstalk.  Since the DS80PCi402 is in a physically small package, you are able to place the signal conditioning near the perimiter of the PCB, so on the receive side, the signal is not further degraded after receiving it, and on the transmit side, the best possible quality signal is being provided to the cable.

    When in pin mode (ENSMB = 0), equalization and de-emphasis can be selected via pin for each side
    independently. When de-emphasis is asserted VOD is automatically adjusted
    The RXDET pins provides automatic and manual control for input termination (50Ω or >50KΩ). RATE setting is
    also pin controllable with pin selections (Gen 1/2, auto detect and Gen 3). The receiver electrical idle detect
    threshold is also adjustable via the SD_TH pin.   Auto rate detect is therefore possible without SMBus.
