RS485

Following is a snapshot from the datasheet of ISO-15 RS485 transceiver.

Can someone help me understand what the symbol between Emitter terminal and ground stands for ?

Also, if we are connecting two RS485 devices, do we need to transmit the ground wire as well along with the differential pair?

  • Hi Dilbagh,

The symbol you are referring to is a current source. It is used for biasing the comparator on the receiver.

You do not need to tie a ground wire between the RS485 nodes. Since the node is isolated it will float to the ground potential of the other node. It will not hurt the system if you do tie the nodes together with a ground, but it is an extra wire ($).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    John
