ESD protection for DP83640

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83640

Hi, are there any recommendations for the ESD protection of the DP83640 PHY? e.g. TVS diode arrays between the magnetics and the PHY? Thanks! Best regards, Christian
  • Christian,

Can you provide some details of your application?  In general, the DP83640 is sufficiently robust to operate without any additional external protection.  For environments with greater potential for volatility or higher system level requirements (IEC61000 requirements, Power over Ethernet, potentially charged cables, etc.), we will occasionally recommend a TVS diode array or some other protection, but we generally approach these applications on a case by case basis.

We do have an application note with some discussion on IEC tests at:

You might find some of that information helpful as well.

  • Christian,

Did you find the information you need in the application note?  Is there more information required?

    Patrick

  • Patrick, Thank you very much for your help. On our board, the DP83640 was destroyed by ESD pulses applied to the Ethernet cable. We could solve the problem now by adding an 10M resistor between the ground on the PHY side and the shield of the Ethernet line/the housing of the device to prevent that the charge of the ESD pulses accumulate in the capacitors that are placed between GND and shield.
