VESD QUESTION OF TPD12S521

Hi~

 Our customer use TPD12S521 to protect ESD in set top box application.

To protect ESD, our customer have 2-type solution as below :

1. TPS12S521 : Failure

    ~ #7 PIN OF TPD12S521 : Data is not output

2. ON-SEMI ESD7004 : No problem

If see datasheet 6-page of TPD12S521, VESD is mentioned +-8KV(MIN) only.

Our customer want below documents.

1. VESD(MAX) Level

2. ESD Test Result Document for the TMDS_D0+-,  TMDS_D1+-, TMDS_D2+-, TMDS_CK+- 

3. Reporting history for specific port demage

4. When received demage as ESD, What Does the port(TMDS_D0+-/D1+-/D2+-/CK+- status?

   - Example) Short to GND(??), Open(??)

     Our customer use TPD12S521 to protect ESD in set top box application.

        ~ MPEG IC Data(connected to  #7 PIN OF TPD12S521) is not output.

           If MPEG IC did change, status is normal.

    2. ON-SEMI ESD7004 : No problem

    If see datasheet 6-page of TPD12S521, VESD is mentioned +-8KV(MIN) only.

    Our customer want below documents.

    1. VESD(MAX) Level

    2. ESD Test Result Document for the TMDS_D0+-,  TMDS_D1+-, TMDS_D2+-, TMDS_CK+- 

    3. Reporting history for specific port demage

    Hello Jayden,

     

    The TPD12S521 is rated for IEC-61000-4-2 level 4 ESD rating on the connector side pins as outlined in the datasheet, which as you stated is +/-8kV for pin 7. 

    To better help me address your concern, please provide what level of ESD strike the part is failing at, and what the test conditions are for your test setup.

    To answer your questions in order:

    1. You are correct, the maximum rating specified for this device is +/-8kV

    2 and 3. Test results contain proprietary information which cannot be shared in a public forum. Please refer to the data sheet for device parameters that are guaranteed by TI.

    However, typical failure types are shorts to ground.
