ESD protection TUSB8040A1

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB8040, TPD2EUSB30, TUSB8040A1

Hi,

I see that there is no ESD protection on the reference design schematics.I believe there was on the previous TUSB8040 reference design. Is there any reason these were removed?

I know it is talked about in the application report but curious as to why it would be removed form the ref design?

Cheers

Calum

  • Hi Calum,

It looks like the TPD devices are not populated on either 8040EVM or 8040AEVM and not even optional on the 8040A1EVM. Vbus lines on all three boards have EMI/ESD filters (caps and ferrite beads).

    From the 8040EVM User's Guide:

The TUSB8040 REV B EVM incorporates ESD protection circuitry for the differential pairs of all five ports. The TPD2EUSB30 devices are not required or populated on the EVMs, but are recommended for any system where ESD events are a concern, especially if the end equipment requirements exceed the device specifications (i.e. HBM 2000 kV, CDM 500 V) (see SLVSAC2).

    From the 8040AEVM User's Guide:

The TUSB8040AEVM incorporates ESD protection circuitry for the differential pairs of all five ports. The TPD2EUSB30 devices are not required or populated on the EVMs, but are recommended for any system where ESD events are a concern, especially if the end equipment requirements exceed the device specifications (i.e. HBM 2000 kV, CDM 500 V) (SLVSAC2).

No optional ESD device or note is indicated for the 8040A1EVM.

  • One final note: For TUSB8040A1 applications, this still applies:

TPD2EUSB30 devices are not required, but are recommended for any system where ESD events are a concern, especially if the end equipment requirements exceed the device specifications (i.e. HBM 2000 kV, CDM 500 V) (see SLVSAC2).
