Low-side Industrial serializer

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVS880

We have an application where we need to interface low-side Industrial inputs (switches to GND) so that our input circuit needs to be sourcing current.

I do see that the SN65HVS880 input serializer sinks current from input sensors or switches connected to 24V. But we do not want this. We want the other application (sourcing current).

Any suggestions on what solution might be useful in this case?

  • Hi Norbert,

I'd like to get some clarification on what you are trying to do. It sounds like you have some open-drain output channels (how many?) that you are trying to serialize? What type of current do you need - do you need to have a constant current? Are you just trying to sense when the low-side FET is on or off? Would a pull-up resistor work?

With some more information, we may be able to suggest something.

    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Hi Jason,

Thanks for your reply. Due to the preliminary nature of the project, I cannot provide too many details but I will try to answer as best I can. Yes we do have open-drain switches or resistive contact loads we are trying to sense. There are more than 50 of these. We don't need constant current - we need less than 5mA current with the input shorted to ground. Due to the high number of inputs and limited board space availability, we would have preferred an IC-based solution with SPI or other serial interface, which also helps keeping isolation channels to the controller to a minimum.

    Thanks and regards,

    Norbert
