I have been given a USB HUB design based on the TUSB2036 done by somebody else.

At this point I have corrected most if not all errors but I am confronted with a strange problem.

In the data sheet and the example schematics the 'mode' pin has to be grounded to use an external 6MHz crystal. However on the board the 6MHz crystal is only oscillating when the chip is in the reset mode (reset pin grounded).

When I connect the 'mode' pin to 3.3V the crystal oscillate correctly out of reset. I couldn't find an errata related to this and I cannot imagine that such a big difference from the data sheet would have passed unseen or undocumented.
