SN65LVDS100

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65LVDS100, SN65LVCP418

Customer asks: we are looking to drive LVDS signals at 500Mbps.   We would like to be able to drive up to 50 meters.  Is this possible with any TI parts?  Do you have any appnotes that describe max length vs. signal quality?

I recommended SN65LVDS100 and some app notes---is there something else I can recommend that might be better?

  • Hi Stephen,

I have a few questions for you:

    1.  What kind of cable does the customer want to use?  This will have a large impact on the maximum transmission distance.

    2.  Are they interested in a receiver as well, or just a driver?

    3.  How much jitter is allowable at the receiver output?

    4.  How many signals need to be transmitted?

We don't have an app note yet on maximum transmission distance for LVDS, but I am working on one this week.  So far, I have measured that the SN65LVDS100 can transmit 12 m over CAT5e cable at 500 Mbps with total jitter of about 10% UI.  If ~20% UI jitter is allowable, it can transmit 18 m over CAT5e.

For 50 m, it may be a good idea to look at something like the SN65LVCP418, which features transmit pre-emphasis and receive equalization.  I haven't had a chance to test it with cables > 20 m, but in general it can go furthur than the SN65LVDS100.  It can also help to use a better cable like CAT7, which has lower attenuation and better attenuation-to-crosstalk ratio.
