LMH0387 - ESD protection diode

Hi Team,

Our customer is considering to connect an ESD protection diode (0.1pF@1MHz,1Vrms) at the BNC connector.

I think it would affect return loss characteristic.

Can you recommend connecting such ESD protection diode ?

Please tell us if there are anything what we should care about.

Thanks in advance.

Kawai

  • Hi Kawai,

Somebody is looking into this and will reply shortly.

  • Adding this ESD protection diode will absolutely affect the return loss.  If good return loss is of critical importance, then such a device should not be used.

Nevertheless, when using such an ESD device, there are things you can do to attempt to minimize the impact to the return loss and to the LMH0387 performance.  Please consider the following:

    • Select a device with the lowest capacitance possible (we would recommend 0.3 pF or less, and it looks like this device meets that)
    • Select a device with the smallest size, so the smallest component pads can be used to minimize the impact to the 75Ω trace impedance
    • Consider relieving the ground layer under the component pads of the device to minimize the parasitic capacitance
