TFP501 TFP510

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TFP501

Please allow me to ask three questions bellow

Q1. If TFP501/501 can be used in HDMI application?.

I think the HDMI and DVI sues the same physical layer called TMDS.
If so, can you use TFP501 In a HDMI source device?
Likewise, can TFP510 be used in HDMI Sink device?

Q2. If TFP510 evaluation board or reference design is available?

Q3. When an on board EDIT ROM is re-programed, do you need to power of the TFP501,
need to keep its power on, or can be re-programmed regardless of power on/off of TFP501?

  • Hello,

Q1. The TFP501/510 can only transport the video portion of the HDMI signal, when the audio is encoded on the TMDS stream the blanking periods change and the TFP501/510 does not support those changes, so if your HDMI signal has video only then the TFPs will work.

Q2. Yes, please sned your email and I can send you a reference design.

Q3. The EDID isn’t really interfaced directly with the 501, there is an EDID ROM in the display involved with that support (Through the DDC lines).

As far as the EDID goes, the 501 is not involved (Although the DDC lines may interface with the 501, the EDID ROM has a unique address so it has no interaction with the DVI receiver)

    Regards.

  • Elias-san,

Thank you for your prompt answers.

    My e-mail address is Kikuo.mita@ti.com.
Please send me a reference design.

In terms of Q3, please allow me to confirm one point.
I understand that EDIT ROM is directly accessed through a ROM Programmer via I2C.

If the TFP501 is interfaced to the DDC line and its power is off, I concerns that TFP501
pull the I2C line low because the current may be passing through the ESD protection
diode or other circuitry inside TFP501.

Please let me confirm that this does not occur while TFP501 power is off.

  • Hello Mita-san,

I will send you the ref schematic.

Regarding your question, please visit the below link for an implementation to avoid that situation.

  • Elias-san,

    Thank you for the schematic.

In terms of Q3, I take look the reference schematic.
Please let me confirm my understanding bellow.

By using tow FETs on DDC line, it isolate TFP501 from
DDC interface when 3.3V power is off.
Consequently, EDIT ROM can be programmed via DDC
interface without interaction with TFP501 despite of power state of TFP501.
    Is it correct?

    Mita

  • Hello Mita-san,

    You are correct.

Please note that the 3.3V on the gate of the FETs must be the Vcc for the TFP501.

    Regards.
