Can be used the DP83848C to create Ethernet Switch?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83849C

Hi.

I'm designing a hardware based on a development board.

The development board has a microcontroller with Ethernet Controller and the PHY is DP83848 with standard RMII interface.

I want that my hardware has an embedded ethernet switch. That way I would not need to place an external ethernet switch, and simply from a second ethernet port I'll connect another device.

My questions is:

Is it possible to design it with the DP83849C?

Thanks

  • The DP83849 is a two port PHY.  It does not include the necessary circuitry for filtering, buffering, forwarding, etc. that is found in an Ethernet switch.

TI does offer devices that include Ethernet switch functionality, e.g. Sitara and Keystone devices.  Perhaps a development board for one of those would be a good starting point for your design?
