Using DP83848I in SNI mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83848I

Hello, I plan to create a new design to replace an old 10BT PHY.  The DP83848I in SNI mode looks promising.  I would like to know if there are any considerations to make when driving this part i.e. could this be a "drop-in" replacement from a sw point of view? Is there any other documentation on using this part in SNI mode?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

  • Brian,

It is hard to say if the device could be a "drop-in" from a software point of view.  That really depends on the operating system and how the current software was written.

SNI mode can be enabled by strapping device pins so no software interaction is required for configuration.  However, if the software is written to write device specific registers or to check for a device ID during initialization, it may not work with a new PHY.

Having noted that, you could get a DP83848I evaluation board and wire it into your existing system to check.  The signal integrity would not be ideal, but SNI is pretty slow so it should still work.
