SN65LVDS324 Compatibility

Hi there,

We have designed a product around the Aptina MT9F002 CMOS sensor, which unfortunately will not go into production with a parallel interface. In order to get video data into our DM368, we have designed in the SN65LVDS324. The Aptina datasheets are a little ambiguous with regard to its support for the Streaming-SP HiSPi protocol and it has been extremely difficult to get in contact with anyone at Aptina to confirm support for that mode.

As I read the main datasheet, though, the MT9F002 does support 12-bit Streaming-SP LVDS output, despite lack of other documentation of it. My questions, then are as follows:

  1. Can other sensors besides the ones specifically listed in the SN65LVDS324 Implementation Guide (Rev. B) be used with the LVDS324, provided that they support 12-bit Streaming-SP?
  2. Does anyone know if the MT9F002 in particular is compatible with the LVDS324?

Based on the limited documentation at the time we initially designed this board several months ago, we assumed that the answers to both (1) and (2) were yes. Now we are having a very difficult time answering either question and are becoming increasingly desperate to find a workable solution, so any guidance on our situation would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you,
Jeff

  • Hello Jeff,

Could you share the MT9F002's datasheet because we don't have information regarding the compatibility between the SN65LVDS324 and the MT9F002.

    Regards,

    Diego.

  • Hi Diego,

I do have the datasheet but am unsure whether I can share it publicly due to my NDA with Aptina. Is there a better way to get that information to you?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

Mail me the document to diego.cortes@ti.com

    Regards,

    Diego.

  • Hello Jeff,

I reviewed the information and you are right; besides it is a wide document, there are no clear information about the HiSPi interface. According to the info I found the MT9F002 may be compatible with the SN65LVDS324, I used as my reference the tale 18 on the file MT9F002_DG_B.pdf (page 28), where they are describing the following mode:

HiSPi 1080p +20%EIS (2304x1296) at 59.94 fps Readout Mode Programming (continued)
    Input clock = 24MHz, Output Bit Clock = 548MHz, Internal Array Clock = 219.2MHz, Output Pixel Clock = 54.8MHz.

This mode seems to be compatible with the SN65LVDS324 configured as:

        1-Channel 4-Lane 12bpp mode.

        2-Channel 2-Port 12bpp and 1-Channel 4-Lane 12bpp (PLL Multiplier = 2/3):SCLK = 55.5 to 99MHz, CLKOUT = 37 to 66MHz..

Please analyze my conclusion because I am not 100% sure about the compatibility.

    Best regards,

    Diego.

  • @Jeff: I'm now trying to do exactly the same as you seem have to done already. I want to update my design from a 3 MPix Sensor with parallel interface to the MT9F002. So I have to use the HiSpi Interface, too. I wanted to use the SN65LVDS324, too, but probalby only using a 10 bit interface.

So, could you tell me about your experience using the MT9F002 together with SN65LVDS324.

@ Diego: Is there any Altium Library in which SN65LVDS324 is inclueded? I downloaded all TI libraries, but didn't find this chip. There is also no link for Altium files at the product page.

  • Hi Markus,

Basically, despite what the datasheet says and repeated assurances from Aptina, it turns out that this will not work. We have instead chosen to use some of the non-mass-production parallel interface MT9F002 modules as an intermediate step while pursuing an FPGA-based deserializer solution based on a Lattice MachXO2.

    Hopefully that helps,

    Jeff.

  • Hello Markus,

I think there is no Altium library including the SN65LVDS324.

    Best regards,

    Diego.

  • First: sorry for the late response and thanks for your quick responses!!!

    @Jeff,

not really good new, you tell here. But I'm glad I found your post before I did to much design work.
Do you now have your board running using the Lattice device instead of the SN65LVDS324?

Do you know, if Aptina has some reference design of this, especially using the MT9F002? And: what does their statement "not going into mass production" really mean? They do have the device, you can order samples. Will there be the possibility to order small amounts in future?

    @ Diego,
thanks for the answer. Is there any hint from TI reagarding my / our problem?

  • Hello Markus,

To provide any extra idea first I need to review more information from Aptina.

    Regards,

    Diego.
