XIO2213B - 1394b trace length recommendations

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: XIO2213B, XIO2213BEVM

Hello,

What is the maximum recommended length of the differential 1394b traces for the XIO2213B?

I saw there was a 20-inch recommendation for the PCI-E traces in the Implementation Guide, but have heard conflicting numbers on the 1394b, as short as 0.8 inches. The 1394b traces on the XIO2213BEVM look to be at least 2.5 inches. On a new design using the XIO2213B, we are looking at a max 1394b trace length of 5 inches, but wanted to make sure this wasn't outside the expected bounds.

Thanks,

Jonathan Bender

  • Hello,

The trace length is usually not specified but the loss channel.

Typically, if the trace impedance is controlled and they follow the general routing guidelines a 5 inches trace should cause no issues.

    Regards.

  • Hi Elias,

    Thanks for the information.

For reference, the general routing guidelines on page 9 of the Implementation Guide state,

“The 1394b TPA and TPB differential pairs must follow the same routing guidelines as the PCI Express

TX and RX differential pairs except for the differential impedance requirement of 110 ohms. For an

unused port, all five terminals can be left as no connects.”

The PCI-E guidelines start on page 6 of the same document.
