Hi,

DS80PCI402 data sheet says in page one that Rate adaptive receive EQ transmit deemphasis only Gen1/2.

If we select Gen3, could we not adapt equalization and de-emphasis in SMBUS MODE?

    Hi Kato San,

    The DS80PCI402 is not an adaptive equalizer, one that automatically set the equalizer setting.

    It is a user-settable equalizer, ie user needs to know the transmission loss of the trace at its input and sets the proper equalizer setting.

    It does have an AUTO-RATE detection feature. That is, it automatically detects the speed of the incoming signals and set the operating mode of the equalizer to GEN1,2 or Gen3 mode.

    To answer you question, yes. users always have the option to program the SMBus registers to adjust the operating mode, equalizer setting or de-emphasis settings.

    Hi Kato-san,

    De-emphasis functionality is available in Gen-3 if you tie the RATE pin high to VDD. Please see the footnote below Table 3.

    Our customer would only use SMBus registers to adjust the operating mode in GEN3.
