What is the best quad RS-422 driver?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM26C31, AM26LV31E

Hello,

I'm working on an application where we use 4-8 quad driver ICs per product. I have both 5V rail and 3.3V rail available. Power consumption doesn't matter. What is the best driver IC that is compatible with RS-422 receivers? By best, I mean strongest output voltages, short-circuit protection, idiot-proofing, ESD protection, etc. In that order.

Thanks,

Derek

  • Derek,

I would have jumped in sooner but the best RS422 driver as you described it would be a RS485 driver. This is because a RS485 driver can drive a line terminated at both ends.

Since no RS485 devices were suggested, I like AM26C31 for it's large VOD into 100 ohms. I also like AM26LV31E for it's strong ESD performance and QFN heat sink package.  These are quad driver to lower the chip count. However, single drivers (like most RS485) will spread the heat instead of localizing it.
