Using HD3SS215 as a HDMI2.0 level shifter

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS215

Hello,

I would like to check if it is possible to use the HD3SS215 as a HDMI2.0 (6Gbps) level shifter?  In my application, the HDMI2.0 output on my device is a 1.8V output.  Can I connect my device to the HD3SS215 using AC couple and connect the HD3SS215 to the HDMI2.0 display?

Thanks,

Alfred

  • Hello,

From a voltage level perspective it sound possible, but there is a risk for the signal integrity, we have not implemented that before. Can you elaborate more how are you planing to shift the level?

    Regards.

  • Hello Elias,

    Thanks for your reply.

I assume the HD3SS215 input is terminated internally with a 50ohm resistor to 3.3V when it is configured as a HDMI input, so I must configure the HD3SS215 input to DP mode. On the video source side, I will need to add an external 50ohm resistor terminated to 1.8V, then connect to the HD3SS215 input via a 0.1uF capacitor. Is my assumption correct?

Actually, from looking at the data sheet, it doesn't look like there is any configuration pin for DP input or HDMI input.  How does the HD3SS215 know what signal it is receiving?

    Thanks,

    Alfred

  • Hello,

The HD3SS215 has no internal terminations to Vcc, you will need to provide the required terminations at the sink or source side according with the signal you are using (DP or HDMI).

The AC coupling capacitors are indeed required on the DP lines, you can place them at the source side of sink side.

The Switch is configured to work with DP or HDMI through the input AUX_SEL.

There is a description of this on the Sections 7.4 and 8.2.2 of the datasheet.

    Regards.
