Audio ADC to PC via PCIe or firewire

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM3168

My question is simple... Is it possible to connect an audio ADC (PCM3168) to a PCIe port in the PC? Do i need a DSP or is there any more direct solution? I want to do a PCIe soundcard... is there any chip that can work as an interface from the ADC to de PCI bus?

  • I²S and PCIe are quite different, and the latter is rather complex; to connect the PCM3168 (or pretty much any other ADC) to PCIe, you need a separate chip.

Sound cards are rare nowadays; as far as I know, the only PCI audio chip series you could buy are the C-Media CMI8788 or the VIA Envy24.
(And those are PCI; you need a PCI/PCIe bridge chip, too.)

As for FireWire: specialized hardware/software solutions such as the BridgeCo DM1500 or TCAT DICE have been discontinued; you'd have to wait for the DICE III or use something like the TSB43CB43A and write lots of firmware yourself.

  • Thanks for answering... so if i want to build a multitrack soundcar i guess the simplest way would do it via USB... I heard USB multitrack soundcards were not reliable... but anyway i could give it a try... As i cant get Envy 24 ir CMI8788 here in my country

    Thanks again

  • The biggest problem with USB is that Windows has no built-in driver for USB Audio Class 2.0.
You'd have to write your own or buy the one from Thesycon.

  • Hi: I'm starting to think that building a homemade sound card is almost impossible... if someone has any advice i would be very grateful... Anyways thank you very much

  • What do you want to do differently that any of the existing sound cards/devices?

  • Hi... Is not really what i want the problem... is what i can get...

I want a sound card for recording 8 channels (at least) at the same time, in different tracks. I want to build that kind of sound card and then make the drivers. The problem is that sound cards are very expensive in my country, and more for a student. So, i was thinking in building one myself, that would also count as a final project for a course I'm doing, so it was like killing 2 birds with one shot.

For example, an ESP1010e from ESI-EGO-SYS is the cheapest 8-channel sound card i can get here, and is around U$D700 (probably in USA is cheaper, but importing taxes are pretty high). Considering that i earn around U$D100 a month for the work i do in the university, that is a little high for me. Not to mention that that sound card is discontinued.

But as i cant build it, i guess i will have to save money and choose other project for my course...

Thanks for your interest! I always appreciate how quick you answer
