IEEE 1588 implementation using DP83640 PHYTER

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83640

I've to synchronize my clock to GPS clock using IEEE1588 PTP. I have IEEE1588 MAC in my FPGA. Do i need to have Precision PHYTER DP83640 along with IEEE1588 MAC to implement this or is it enough to have IEEE1588 MAC alone to implement this or is it enough to have Precision PHYTER DP83640 alone?

Please tell me why do we need DP83640 PHYTER. what is it going to do apart from IEEE 1588 MAC for PTP. Please clarify me.

  • The advantage of the DP83640 is the synchronization precision that it can offer.  The timestamping of packets is handled in the PHY.  This minimizes sources of error in the measurement.  We have an application note on the synchronization precision of the DP83840 at:
