Whether CAN devices will need silent mode in the future?
Our customer want to know whether silent mode become industrial standards due to request from car industries.
Please advice about the above.
Best regards.

Hi Alpha,
The modes required in a system will always be application dependent. I don’t think I will be able to tell you whether or not a node will need the mode or not.
Silent mode is a simple mode that lots of suppliers have where the driver is turned off and the high speed receiver is still active. This mode is not mentioned at all in the ISO11898 standards and was created by a supplier where then more suppliers followed the lead.
I have seen indicator nodes, or display nodes (like an instrument cluster in a car) use silent mode. I have also seen schematics where a vendor disconnected the TXD pin from the µController and tied it high. Therefore they created a silent mode node (since it cannot transmit) without having the mode built into the transceiver. As long as there are nodes in a system that only need to take in data and not send any data, there could be a need for this type of transceiver.
Thanks,
John
