TUSB8020B - Does not recognize USB attached SCSI (UAS) mass storage device

Hi Team,

Could you please give us your advice to our customer's TUSB8020B situation ?

Our customer's USB host can recognize and work fine with the USB mass storage device and also UAS mass storage device when directly connected to the USB port on the PC.

However, when TUSB8020B USB hub controller is used, USB Host cannot recognize the UAS mass storage device.

They have tested with other two vender's USB hub controller evaluation board. One worked fine but the other had the same situation with TUSB8020B.

If the USB host and the USB device supports UAS, I believe it should be able to communicate correctly. What do you think is the cause to this issue ?

I am currently asking if the USB device has enough Bus voltage as it is BUS powered.

Best Regards,
Kawai

  • Hello,

Are they using a EVM from TI? If not, can you share their schematic?

If they are can you send a picture of the EVM where we can see the dip switch configuration.

As you said, it is probably a power issue, ask them to try with external power.

can you get the model of the mass storage devices?

    Regards.

  • Hi Elias-san,

    Yes, they are using TUSB8020B-EVM.

For the picture, do you mean the switch setting for SW1 in the EVM schematic ? I will ask customer for information.

UAS mass storage device which they are using is PSZ-HA2T.

    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Kawai

  • Hi Elias-san,

Here is the EVM switch and jumper settings. Could you review the settings ? I believe this is the default setting.

    [SW1]
    Pin1-16 : ON
    Pin2-15 : OFF
    Pin3-14 : OFF
    Pin4-13 : ON
    Pin5-12 : OFF
    Pin6-11 : OFF
    Pin7-10 : OFF
    Pin8-9 : OFF

    [JP1] All OFF
    [JP2] ON
    [JP7] ON
    [JP8] ON

    Best Regards,
    Kawai

  • Elias-san,

    I have one more question.

Can TUSB8020B support UAS device ? (USB attached SCSI protocol)

    Best Regards,
    Kawai

  • Hi Kawai-san,

The TUSB8020B can support UAS devices.  The hub only passes commands from host to device it does not process them.  If the downstream device is bus powered, I would recommend a 5 VDC power supply that can supply at least 3A for the test.  If this still doesn't work, can you check what appears under Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device Manager? I'd like to know what the host sees on the bus.

    Thanks,

    JMMN

  • Hi JMMN-san,

    Thanks for your support.

Customer tested with the customized USB device. They modified their bus powered SSD to self powered SSD using external power supply, but there were no change to the result. I could send you customer's test data including the device manager information. Could we discuss offline ?

    Beset Regards,
    Kawai
