HDMI maximum cable distance with TPD12S521 on evm 8148

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD12S521

Hi,

Our custom boards used TPD12S521 to tramitter HMDI signal.

When I use 3m  dvi/hdmi cable for  16-inch display and 64-inch display , every thing is well.

However, when I use 10m   dvi/hdmi cable for  64-inch display,it  appears snowflake  on the display.

but 3m for   64-inch display ,it is ok!

So, we want to know what is wrong with it? and   how long  the cable is good  for  TPD12S521?

Could you give me some advice?

Thanks in advances!

Best Regard,

Stone

  • Hi Stone,

The ability to drive these longer cable lengths is typically dependent upon the Sinks (the display) having a cable equalization function which allows them to recover data from such cables. If you want to drive longer cables to a Sink without this functionality you will need to use a redriver/repeater that has it. This can be an active cable. To do this you will need to ensure that the 55-mA available on 5V_OUT is enough to power the active cable. An alternative is Active Cable Extenders which are self-powered.

With that said, the length of the cable that can be driven past TPD12S521 is mostly dependent upon the Source strength and the cable quality. Very high end HDMI cables can work up to 15m without needing a re-driver, but these far exceed a standard cable limit of up to about 7.5m.
