TUSB9261 / Operate as only SATA Gen1

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB9261

Hi All,

Our customer has evaluated TUSB9261 to implement it in your system. They plan to connect SATA Gen2 SSD but they want to communicate with SATA Gen1. So can we use TUSB9261 with only SATA Gen1 communication forcibly?

Best Regards,

Sonoki / Japan Disty

  • Hello Satoshi-san

Yes, the TUSB9261 supports the SATA Gen 1 devices, so the customer can be confident on use our device.

    Regards,
    Diego.
  • Hi Diego-san,

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I know that TUSB9261 support the SATA Gen1 and Gen2, so it can communicate with Gen1 SSD and Gen2 SSD. But now my customer want to communicate with Gen1 when the Gen2 SSD is connected. Can we set TUSB9261 to such configuration?

    Best Regards,
    Sonoki
  • Hello Sonoki,

The configuration is possible, however it is necessary to have a special firmware to enable the GEN1 only. Could you describe your issue or situation? Why you need the Gen1 speed only?.

    Best regards,

    Diego.

  • Hi DIego-san,

They need to transmit SATA signal through PCB to PCB in their system, so the insertion loss should be considered due to connector. So they are considering to use Gen1's lower data rate. That is why they want to know if TUSB9261 can be used with Gen1 only.
Now they are just reviewing their system requirement, so let me ask detail to enable the Gen1 only when they will fix their requirement.

    Best Regards,
    Sonoki
  • Hi Diego-san,

Please let me know the procedure to configure TUSB9261 to enable the GEN1 only.

    • Should customer modify firmware by themselves or TI can provide special firmware?
    • How long will it take to modify the firmware?
    • Is the extra cost needed for this requirement?

  • Hello Sonoki-san,

I do believe that it is customer's responsibility to develop the firmware, however I just asked to confirm. A second solution would be to have a SATA re-driver in order to compensate the connector loss. Do you have any data about the expected loss on the channel?

    Regards,
    Diego
  • Hello Sonoki-san,

Another option is to have a longer USB3 cable (It might need a USB3 re-driver) and place the TUSB9261 in the same board where the SSD is being attached.

    Best regards,
    Diego.
  • Hi Diego-san,

Can you advice to develop the firmware for enabling the GEN1 only if they hope to do it by themselves? Will you support it on E2E or off-line if they decide to develop it?

    Best Regards,

    Sonoki

  • Hello Sonoki-san,

TI can provide the firmware version you need, It will take a few days to be done, so please send me an email to diego.cortes@ti.com including a brief project description and the business case, in order to provide the custom firmware version.

    Regards,
    Diego.
  • Hi Diego-san,

Thank you for your support. So far, our this business is just development phase and they consider to use re-driver as first priority. Let me contact you if our customer choose the option of Gen1 only firmware again.

    Best Regards,
    Sonoki
