Hello,

I'm currently developing a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed device IP core dedicated to industrial highbandwidth video applications.

So I'm interested in TI's USB 3.0 Phy solution.

Could you let me know the status of that device?

Are there samples available?

When is production start?

The TUSB1310 is sampling at this time. Please contact your authorized TI distributor to request samples.

Initial production will be in the May timeframe.

There are third party complete development systems available from IP suppliers such as PLDA or System Level Solutions that have the TUSB1310 down on the board.

The general HAPS development platformis available from Synopsys and we have a TUSB1310 daughter card that interfaces to this development platform.

Once you have a HAPS FPGA board we can get you a 1310 daughter card.

OK, that's certainly good timing for us. Can you comment as to whether your part can be a drop-in replacement to the SMSC USB3318? I'm assuming that since the interface to the processor is still ULPI it should be OK but I don't know if anything changed between 2.0 and 3.0 as far as the ULPI communication goes.

I need to check now if it's even possible for the XMOS part to enumerate as 3.0 but don't use super-speed but I have a feeling that may be my next hurdle...

If by drop-in you mean pin-for-pin, then no. The TUSb1310 is a SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) transceiver that has two data paths - one for SuperSpeed USB and one for USB 2.0.

The ULPI interface is for the USB 2.0 data path. The SuperSpeed USB digital interface is PIPE3 and requires around 50 pins.

The TUSB1310 is in a 175-ball BGA.

No, sorry, I didn't mean pin for pin, just functionality. From your description it sounds like the XMOS processor's firmware wouldn't have to change if I replaced the SMSC USB3318 with a TI TUSB1310. But from your comment that the ULPI interface is for USB 2.0 data path than I think I wouldn't be able to enumerate as a USB 3.0 device and be able to pull 900mA since the XMOS processor only has the ULPI interface.

It is even more complicated – some of the "connection" events are transferred over the PIPE3 interface, so the TUSB1310 should not be used as a ULPI-only transceiver in conjunction with a USB 2.0 only core.

Could you elaborate on your last statement? I'm trying to use the TUSB1310 connected to an FPGA. Currently I'm using a USB2.0 only core. What connection events are coming over the pipe3 interface?

There is an errata with VBUS Valid reporting over the ULPI, see the errata on ti.com. This errata essentially prohibits a legacy USB2 controller from working without a modification. You have to create some logic to use the power present PIPE pin to detect VBUS in the USB2 controller.
