  • Hi,

There are many factors which can influence the maximum cable length.  When a device does not have signal conditioning I tend to limit the maximum cable loss to about -3 dB.  Based on CAT5 specifications, the cable loss at 50 MHz (nyquist frequency for 100 Mbps) is approximately 0.16 dB/meter.  This value would allow almost 20 meters of cable to be driven at 100mbps datarate.

LVDS has a limited common mode voltage range.  So long cable runs can run into trouble with GND potential.  Ethernet uses magnetics to overcome this problem.  If LVDS is going to drive an external cable, I would recommend using some data encoding or scrambling so that AC coupling can be used to isolate the Rx and Tx devices.
