Query about GND & Shiled GND in USB ESD protection circuit

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD4S014

We are usign TPD4S014 as an ESD for battery charging circuit. I have a question on the board GND and shiled GND connectivity. As per the typical application circuit given in the data sheet for NON-OTG applications the input and output 10uF caps need to be connected to GND on VBUS. Please confirm whether these should be connected to normal board GND or connector shield GND?

What is your recommendation about combining Shild and normal board GNDs? Is it through Mega OHM range resistor or high value capacitor or any other? This is the circuit which i have connected in my board. Please clarify.

Thank You.

  • Srikanth,

It should not matter which ground the bypass capacitors use. I think that connecting the TVS ground to shield ground is the correct way to design as it protects the analog/digital grounds very well. Most of the time an inductor connects these two ground planes, 100 nH should be sufficient.
