EtherCAT Support PHY (TLK105L/106L/110/111)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLK105L, TLK111, TLK110, TLK100, TLK105

Hi

I confirmed that TLK105L/106L/110/111 will support EtherCAT. Refer to below Ross's answer (thanks).

e2e.ti.com/.../1392100

Now my customer is going to replace KSZ8081 with the TLK device because KSZ8081 intermittently detect unexpected error and FPGA host receive checksum error from PHY.

May I get some information about equalizing and waveform (adopt to EtherCAT) of the TLK device so that they can have a confidence to decide?

I realize that some PHY performance will be critical for EtherCAT reliability, it may be a reason why TI specify which PHY devices will support EtherCAT.

We are not sure if KSZ8081 meets EitherCAT PHY requirement but I would like to have why the TLK devices support EtherCAT especially which may affect the KSZ8081 trouble.

  • Hello
    May I get some advices?

  • Hi Masa,

    Sorry for the delayed response.

To answer your question, the main aspects of being EtherCAT compliant are to conform to the IEEE 802.3 standard and support added features like fast link down detection, 10/100Mbps Full/Half duplex, Auto-MDIX in forced modes, no preamble modification, support LINK LED, support MDIO, support hardware bootstrapping, have TX_CLK signals with fixed phase relation to the clock input.

There is a Beckhoff application note which has our TLK and DP PHYs listed as EtherCAT compliant. We have many customers using the TLK devices in EtherCAT applications.

    Kind regards,
    Ross
  • Hi Ross,

Thank you very much for your response.

I checked the Beckhoff application note - PHY Selection Guide which specifies requirement to EtherNet PHYs.

It lists all the requirements (section 2) including points you described, and example PHYs assumed to fulfill the requirement (table 3). The table has KSZ8081 and TLK and DP devices. I wonder if DP family and TLK100/105/106 are in it. They are not supported as you advised before. Only TLK110 which support is in it. TLK111, 105L nor 106L are not in it.

I compared detail parameter between TLK110 and KSZ8081 but could not see difference in critical functional parameters besides Link loss reaction time (but TLK110's 200us is same as TLK105/106, KSZ8081 is 4.4us, it may not concerned with the error the customer met).

The application note is the result by Beckhoff and based on for their slave controller(ESC).

Does TI have a similar application note or evaluation report which describes how TLK105L/106L/110/111 are supported (not support other TLK and DP)?

    Best regards,
    Masa
