DP83848 Connection to single Differential Pair (10Base2)

Looking at the DP83848 spec I see that it supports full and half duplex modes. The chip can also detect collisions. Thus I was interested in trying to use this chip (or similar chip) to implement a half duplex interface at 10Mb. Can I connect the chip up to support a singe differential pair or coax wire interface between to boards?  I have been reading about how 10Base2 and 10Base5 works but have not seen a recent way to implement this.

  • Hi Chuck,

DP83848 does support half duplex communications for 10BASE-T networks utilizing shared-medium hubs where multiple devices are in the same collision domain. The TX and RX pairs are still 2 separate differential pairs (4 conductors) and a 10BASE2 configuration would require one of these pairs to alternate between TX and RX duties. DP83848 doesn't support this operation.

If you are interested in using Ethernet across a single diff pair, please send me a friend request so we can discuss it further.

    Best Regards,
