HDMI 5V source

Am wondering if you have an idea of how much power this line carries. In the standard it is supposed to be limited to 500mA.

Can we use it to power the HDMI cable extender chips (equalizers)?

  • Hi Mudhafar,

From standard it has over-current protection to no more than 500mA and it shall be able to supply a minimum of 55mA.
So, depending on the device it supplies current from 55mA to 500mA.
Besides, a cable assembly should be able to supply a minimum of 50mA to the +5V Power pin to a Sink.

You need to be sure you sink supplies enough current to power extender IC and such IC should provide a minimum of 50mA to sink.
If extender IC is not powered by 5V you would need to add an extra circuit to get desired voltage.

    Regards
