Are Hsync/Vsync really needed for the DS90UB913Q/914Q?

Hello,

This may seem like a silly question but are the Hsync/Vsync signals really used by the DS90UB913Q/914Q serdes? In other words could I just keep those set high (or low) and have the system transfer the data presented at the data pins?

This chipset is perfect for something I need to do as it has both high speed data and low speed control over a single pair of wires, however this specific application doesn't have Vsync/Hsync signals hence the question.
