TPS65982 / Power Delivery without connecting D+/D- signals (2)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982

Does my customer need to connect D+/D- to tPS65982 if they don't use USB-BC or other specific application?

They will only use PD + DP alt. I've confirmed in another thread that Power Delivery surely works without connecting D+/D-.

However in the case of PD + DP alt application, do they have to connect D+/D- or not?

  • Saito-san,

    Does USB-BC mean BC1.2 specification?

Please explain what type of application has no purpose for D+/D- signals.

Most applications are either a USB2.0 DFP or UFP and have some purpose for D+/D- signals.

  • Yes, USB-BC means BC1.2 specification.
The customer modified their qustion as below.
"Why does TPS65982 need to connect both Top and Bottom side?"
When custumers use BC1.2, we basically need only D+/- (not need to detect Top and Bottom side.)
Is it for "Custom alternate modes"?RegardsSaito
  • The TPS65982 can function as PD/Alt-Mode controller and power path switch with or without D+/D- connections. They are not strictly required. However, there are two particularly good reasons I would recommend routing the D+/D- signals through TPS65982:

    (1) TPS65982 supports USB Type-C orientation detection, and while the USB standard does allow shorting top and bottom D+/D- to each other on the board, there would be a maximum allowed stub length. Using TPS65982 for the orientation detection feature avoids any signal reflection noise you may get by just shorting top to bottom.

    (2) TPS65982 integrates a USB 2.0 Endpoint with the ability to expose a Billboard class device. When using DisplayPort Alternate Mode (or any alternate mode), USB standards mandate USB Billboard support in most cases.

So then D+/D- connections may be needed for this customer if for no other reason than Billboard.
