General ESD question for HBM and CDM models

Hello,

Is there a relationship or equivalency between the HBM and CDM models?

For example, is there something like: 1KV of HBM equal to 200V of CDM ?

Is there any equivalence between these HBM and CDM and the IEC61000-4-2?

Regards

  • Hello Elia,

Based on the event durations and differences in the stress test, the two are not very equivalent. HBM stresses between any two pins for about 150 ns, and CDM stresses any one pin for about 1 ns. I have attached a pdf that shows these and IEC 6100-4-2 ESD waveforms.

    HBM vs IEC 61000-4-2 ESD.pdf

Regarding HBM vs IEC 61000-4-2, a device can typically take 50% higher voltage levels of HBM than IEC 61000-4-2 ESD. i.e. if a device is rated 8 kV ESD, then it should rate 12 kV HBM.

    Regards,
