TPS65982 - ILDO_3V3EX specification

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982

Hello USB Team,

I have a question to the ILDO_3V3EX specification within the datasheet:

On datasheet page 9, we are specifying the parameter ‘ILDO_3V3EX’.

What does this parameter specify and under which test conditions (is this the current available for external loads?)?

The reason is, that my customer thinks this is the externally provided current from LDO_3V3, which under the specified numbers (5mA max) is never enough to supply an Winbond/Spansion Flash chip und read/write conditions.

So can you clarify how much current is maximum available on the LDO_3V3 for external loads, please?

 Thanks

Albert

  • Albert,

All of our designs use the Winbond W25Q80 flash IC and the flash IC is powered from the LDO_3V3 power supply. We have never experienced an issue where LDO_3V3 was unable to successfully power the Flash IC.

A member of our team has identified that there may be a conflict with the datasheet where ILDO_3V3 < IVDD of the Flash IC.

If we need to clarify the datasheet or spec ILDO_3V3 higher we will notify you of the change in this thread.

  • There is currently a conflict in the datasheet between the ILDO_3V3EX max spec and the recommendation to use that pin to power flash.

To reiterate Brian's comment, TI has validated that using LDO_3V3 to power the flash works without issue. Our recommendation continues to be to use LDO_3V3 to power the flash chip; there other possible options, but we feel this is the most straightforward approach for most applications.

The datasheet inconsistency arises because ILDO_3V3EX has been spec'd unnecessarily conservative. Our data shows that we can actually support ILDO_3V3EX = 30-40mA without any issue, possibly higher. We are now in the process of validating the updated max number and plan to update the datasheet accordingly.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

  • Hello Christian,
thanks for the possitive answer. Can you inform me to which 'mA' number the datasheet will be changed (and by when)?
    Thanks
    Albert
  • Hello Christian,
Is there already a final decision for the final spec for the ILDO_3V3EX value in the tps65982 sd? Is the LDO even better than 40mA? Would be interesting to know, since e.solutions need to deceide if they might need an additional LDO.
    ThanksAlbert
