USB 2.0 Device charging support on TPS65982

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982, TPS2544, TPS2514, TPS2513

Hello,

If We are using TPS65982 for charging of USB Type C based device and do we need to connect D+ and D- pin of USB type C connector to any other BC 1.2 specified IC(like TPS2513/TPS2514) for charging of USB 2.0 based devices?

As we know that we can use USB Type C to USB 2.0 micro USB cable for charging of USB 2.0 devices. As per the datasheet page number 53 ofTPS65982 "Battery Charger (BC1.2) Detection Block" point, it mentioned it can detect the BC1.2 devices so can we say that it will support for charging of all USB 2.0 based devices?

If any other IC are available for both use case then please suggest us.

Any help in this case should be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chetan Panchal

  • Chetan,

TPS65982 detects BC1.2 chargers when it is acting as a Sink (Device).

TPS65982 does not advertise BC1.2 capabilities when it is acting as a Source (Host).

Please refer to this App Note for details on how you can achieve BC1.2 advertisement as a Host:

Devices like the TPS2513/TPS2514 may be used in place of the TPS2544 depending on the needs of the application.

  • Dear Brian Berner,

Thank you very much for your response.

Basically we required one chip which supports new Power Delivery specification for Type C and older specification of BC 1.2 standard. But as per my exploration single chip solution is still not available.

    Appreciated your Help.

    Thanks,
