TPA3118D2 Minimum load Impedance

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3118D2

Our customer has a question about TPA3118D2.
I'm posting the question for the customer:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

About Minimum load Impedance of TPA3118D2;

Data sheet describes "Minimum load Impedance[RL(PBTL)] : 1.6ohm(min)"

Our load (connecting to PBTL out) is 2.2ohm at 100Hz and less than 1.0ohm at <50Hz.
But Over-Current protection is working when we output to the load
with High-Pass Filter with a cutoff frequency of 300 Hz.

We have one question;
 Does the "1.6ohm" mean DCR[Direct Current Resistance] ?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Takishin

  • Hi, Takishin
    "Minimum load Impedance[RL(PBTL)] : 1.6ohm(min)", the 1.6ohm means DCR[Direct Current Resistance]. What's customer's PVCC for TPA3118? From Page6 of TPA3118 datasheet, you will find the over current trip point is 7.5A, for PBTL is 7.5A*2=15A, if PVCC=24v, the min load is 24/15=1.6ohm. So if your PVCC <= 24V, you can't see the Over-Current protection occur with load>=1.6ohm.
  • Hi, Takishin
    If you want to test the Over-Current trip point with this speaker which you mentioned, please use the burst signal (similar to actual audio signal). If you use the continuous output power,it will rise TPA3118's temperature and may cause OT.
