Hello,
Is 5V @ 5A a possible negotiated power setting for PP_EXT with TPS65982?
Looking at the USB PD spec, it would seem that a DFP advertising Profile 5 (capable of supplying at least 5V @ 2.0A, 12V and 20V at 5A respectively) would be able to negotiate a current increase to 5A without a voltage increase. However, I'm not clear whether this is actually possible - looking at Table 2 in the latest EVM User's Guide, a 5V@5A sink is unsupported by any of the built-in EVM profile examples.
Thanks,
Jonathan
No, the Type-C & PD Specs do not allow 5V@5A
The PD Spec also does not allow 12V@5A.
To achieve 20V@5A, a special "e-marked" cable is required.
Otherwise, the TPS65982 will automatically advertise 20V@3A, which is the maximum cable current guaranteed by the Type-C spec. This is a great feature to protect the Source!
I hope this quick answer helps. Both the Type-C and PD spec are available at usb.org for FREE
There are other ways in the PD spec to allow >3A of current at 5V for short periods of time, but it will require a longer answer to explain.
