DP83867IR supports IEEE1588 via SFD. We have an application report on 'How to configure DP83867 SFDs' which gives detailed information on how to use the Start of Frame Detect (SFD) for IEEE1588 using the DP83867. It can be found at http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla242/snla242.pdf.

When SFD detection is configured, does the DP83867 signal a start of frame for every packet or only 1588 packets? From the way I understand the documentation, it appears that the DP83867 detects the start of every packet.

Yes, the DP83867 will raise the SFD signal at the beginning of every frame received.

So, how then do we know when a 1588 packet has been detected? Is this done by pattern matching of some sort?

Hi Will,

The MAC and upper layers will need to determine if the packet is a 1588 packet and then correlate the pulse to the packet received. This is how you would do it for any solution that is using IEEE 1588 SFD.
